General Aims and Characteristics
While preserving its leading position in Hungarian higher education, the University of Debrecen intends to become a top-tier research university by 2020, integrating education, research, health care, and agricultural activities with an international ranking in the upper half of both “Programs” and “Institutions.” By providing an educational portfolio aligned with market demands, the institution serves the labor market while addressing the educational needs of the region’s socio-economic factors. Thanks to a wide variety of English-language degree programs combined with outstanding quality education, the University of Debrecen has successfully attracted the largest number of international students of any Hungarian higher education institution.

The university remains an active member of the international scientific community and has developed partnerships with stakeholders in the innovation economy. Its research and development activities, as demonstrated by publications, citations, and income from research grants, have steadily grown and proven outstanding in comparison to national averages. Priority areas of research, such as molecular science, physical, computational and materials science, molecular medicine, medical, health, environmental and agricultural science, linguistics, culture, and bioethicsare selected for their multidisciplinary approach. These focus areas aim to address the socio-economic and scientific challenges emerging in the Human-Health-Environment domains, anticipating demographic and global changes. The University of Debrecen prioritizes support for students' scientific activities, encouraging its most promising graduates to begin their scientific careers there. The interdisciplinary network of honors colleges, embracing the entire scientific spectrum, along with numerous Students' Scientific Associations, helps ensure a new generation of researchers for local, national, and international scientific communities.

Aim of the R&D&I Strategy
The R&D&I strategy of the University of Debrecen outlines the criteria for selecting basic research excellence within the institution and the foundation of that excellence. Recent breakthroughs in applied research and innovation have been based on the high-quality research conducted at the University of Debrecen. The secondary aim of the R&D&I strategy is to designate specific D&I areas and determine the tools and systems needed to enhance and maintain the dynamic development achieved in applied research and innovation.
The overall aim of the R&D&I strategy is to form research groups with outstanding performance records that publish in international journals, continue competitive, revenue-generating research, and win international awards, all while maintaining broad collaborations with national and foreign research institutions and industry.
To achieve these goals, the University of Debrecen is continuously expanding the number of researchers and research assistants. It is committed to establishing conditions that ensure knowledge transfer can be maintained at the highest level. The University will also work to improve internal research cooperation between departments.
Institutions aiming to benefit from the products of innovation need to enhance the conditions for knowledge and technology transfer as well as engage in technology acceleration.
Initiatives to Further Develop the Quality of Education
The University of Debrecen aims to increase the quality of education and foster the development of its region through actions such as organizing internship opportunities in underdeveloped areas and making e-learning materials available to a wider range of students.
